MCS Mission Statement

MCS History

We are very pleased to inform you that the Mount Carmel Alumni and Endowment Foundation have again directed that MCS not raise Tuition Rates or Registration Fees for school year 2011-2012.  MCS has not raised tuition or registration in years and continues to strive to provide the best education on Guam at the most affordable costs possible.  MCS maintains the lowest tuition and registration rates of all Guam private schools while providing Guam’s most accomplished and qualified Faculty and Administration.  Please register soon!

Over the last few years we have enjoyed an annual enrollment of between 400-550 students and our MCS Familia continues to grow!  In order to accommodate our expanding student body we will use this summer break to continue our extensive capital improvement development.  We anticipate replacing the entire roof of our original school building.  The second floor is now home to our Chamorro Lecture Hall and Music Academy; no other school on Guam compares with MCS’ Chamorro Language and Music programs.  We spent proceeds from last year’s MCS Day fundraising on resurfacing and refurbishing both rear stairway entrances, and the floor space and railings outside the Chamorro Lecture Hall.  We completely refurbished and upgraded the Boys’, Girls’, and guests’ bathrooms.  We also completed our largest project this year, the construction of our Administration Building (complete refurbishing and roof replacement of the old Pale’s House).  As a result of this large fundraising effort and capital investment, we now have all MCS administrative functions and operations centralized in one very accessible location.  We are also slowly but surely replacing and upgrading all classroom air conditioners.

In the next few months we will refurnish all of our preschool and kindergarten classrooms, provide three new sets of class furniture (desks and chairs) in our elementary and middle school, replace broken desks and chairs in every classroom, and open up three (3) new elementary classrooms (ensuring smaller class sizes and two classes for every grade - preschool through 8th grade).  MCS will also be adding to its multi-media resources (audio and visual).  We estimate these capital improvements will easily exceed $150,000.  This investment is greatly needed and will contribute enormously to our continued development and improvement of MCS facilities.

Over the last four (4) years we have become the most winning elementary and middle school on Guam (music, sports, language, and other academic competitions).  This year MCS began implementation of a new, higher level reading program.  The last WASC accreditation team labeled MCS the “Harvard of Guam.”  At the same time, we continue to service Guam’s most financially challenged families and maintain the most affordable Tuition of all private schools on Guam.  We are also the only private school on Guam participating in the Federal School Lunch (and breakfast) Program - providing free or reduced meals to students from low income families. Please reserve your children’s place with MCS today!

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School Mission Statement

Mount Carmel School educates and develops the entire Child.  As a private, Catholic school we teach Morals, Values and Culture, just as parents are able to teach the Virtues of right and wrong at home.  Mount Carmel celebrates more than a half century of ensuring our children enjoy education rooted in Tradition, Spirit, Heritage and Pride.  We are community based and MCS students are immediately more relevant and functional in their homes, villages, and Church communities.  We enhance character and discipline while preparing our students for advanced education and the highest roles of responsibility in their lifetimes.   MCS prepares students for lifelong learning and for excellence in family and community.

History of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School (MCS) was founded in 1957 to initially provide a Catholic education to the students of southern Guam under the spiritual guidance of Father Mel McCormack.  Despite the devastation caused by many natural disasters over the years, Mount Carmel School was restored through the kind generosity from many of its alumni and Southern community, thus continuing to provide a quality Catholic education, in line with its traditions and heritage.  The school’s population hit its all time high in the 70’s with an enrollment of over 900 students.  While maintaining its high enrollment, Mount Carmel also maintained its ability to promote students who eventually moved on to become successful and outstanding members of our island community for years to come.

In 2007, the Mount Carmel Alumni and Endowment Foundation was created and Chaired by Attorney Michael F. Phillips.  Resulting from their commitment, generosity and support, the Alumni and Endowment Foundation increased the school’s population and made significant improvements to the school’s physical and educational structure.

Today, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School has a student population ranging between 400 and 550 students enrolled from Pre-K through 8th grade.  Mount Carmel Catholic School has the most highly qualified faculty on Guam and continues to attract master teachers.  Principal Norma San Nicolas Cadag Tabayoyong, with her dynamic educational and administrative strengths, greatly supports the school’s mission to offer the most complete education on island.  Mount Carmel School offers the most complete, progressive school curriculum for students in elementary and middle school.  In addition to rigorous and competitive instruction in areas of Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies, we are the only Guam school to offer full mandatory courses in Religion, Music, Chamorro Language, Physical Education, and Art.  MCS strongly encourages and offers students and parents the greatest opportunity for additional learning through sports and many other extracurricular activities.  MCS produces events ensuring students enjoy early learning experiences working independently and performing collectively as a team with MCS families and in our communities.

Over the last four (4) years MCS has become the most winning elementary and middle school on Guam (music, sports, language, and other academic competitions).

The Mission of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School is to educate and develop the entire Child.  As a private, Catholic school we teach Morals, Values and Culture, just as parents are able to teach the Virtues of right and wrong at home.  Mount Carmel School celebrates more than a half century of ensuring that our children enjoy an education rooted in Tradition, Spirit, Heritage and Pride.  We are community based, and MCS students are immediately more relevant and functional in their homes, villages, and Church communities.  We enhance character and discipline while preparing our students for advanced education and the highest roles of responsibility in their lifetimes.  MCS prepares students for lifelong learning and for excellence in family and community.
